The city of Mercedes is 4 miles from La Vasquita and just 60 miles from the City of Buenos Aires. The City had its origins in 1744 as a small wooden fort that was erected to keep the Serranos and Pampa Indians from raiding the countryside.
Mercedes is today a mystical place that dwells in the stormy Argentine history of battles against the Indians (La Cruz de Palo, 1823), political turmoil (Hechos del Atrio 1898), and religious tradition (the Miracles of the Virgen de la Merced).
Mercedes has a rich Gaucho tradition and international fame thanks to its Fiesta Nacional del Salame Quintero, its Carnival and the Fiesta Nacional del Durazno.
You'll be able to visit its overwhelming Cathedral (Catedral Nuestra SeƱora de las Mercedes), the typical colonial architecture present in houses and city buildings, its parks, museums, the old train stop and Cacho's Pulperia (XIX Century country bar).
